I thought since oranges are both sweet and tart, they represent the ever changingness of first love.

You want to think about the role of simplicty and beauty, both from the perspective of childhood innocence as well as culturally (the relationship between the saleslady and the boy "she know what this is all about") there is a kind of simple closeness, juxtaposed against the image of fire at the end. somehow something as simple as a boy with an orange is being placed beside the image of a man holding/making fire in his hands. Without getting too grandiose this could summon images of Prometeus, birth, love, etc. THe general emotion i get from the poem is a kind of power explained through something small. things to think about :)

Soto contrasts the magic of new love with the situation the boy is living in. He is poor, living in a poor neighborhood. I think it's about the ability to be happy, be in love, live life, etc, despite poverty. Among other things.

Hi, I've read Oranges in seventh grade. You are simply overthinking it. The candy was teird, (SP I think) meaning stacked in rows. The oranges are just something that he had after school. He carried it in his pockets for later. Perhaps for the two to eat. He gets nervous around the girl so he feels weightless. As if being swept off his feet. I also enjoy reading it too. Enjoy! =)
Sincerely,
