Another is used with singular nouns.

Other is used with plural nouns (and uncountable nouns).

Compare:

Another day.

Other days.

"Other" is used when there is a specific reference to a counterpart.

"Another" is non specific.

Other can be used with singular countable, plural countable or uncountable nouns.

1. The other window is open.    <---- countable

2. The other stores are closed. <----- plural countable

3.  Do you have any other baggage?<--- uncountable

When you have two items, you say this one and the other one.

Another one is for the third one or unspecified one.

this one, the other one, and another one.

I was also wondering whether the word 'another' is a combination of 'an' and 'other'.
