Here's how my thinking has evolved. I started out thinking that if I just write something good enough, I'll get through. I've had some success on that basis, but got as far as I'd have liked. So here's the new twist on the thinking, under the influence of NMS and WMM, among others. It's not just a matter of getting a good porfolio of work together, though that's crucial. You also have to become a writer. A big part of that is the ability to work quickly, consistently, and well.
So that's where I'm at. I'm working on producing good work, and producing it quickly.
Deadline's Sunday. I'll post progress notes on how I go. Then, the finished script gets a couple quick rewrites, before I post it onto TriggerStreet for 'peer review', say by Wednesday.

Also, I need to complete the application for the Bournemouth MA programme by tomorrow. Pressure, pressure, pressure. Can I stand the pressure? Can I keep pretending it's real, and not just something I've made up?

I wouldn't get too neurotic about raw speed, it's more about being reliable about
deadlines as opposed to *incredible* speed*.

You got a deadline. Sleep is optional - hit the caffeine or speed or what have you, and do it. Pull some all nighters. Make your pages, grab the chance.
Good luck!

That's the key to doing anything on a professional level. It's never about doing the very best that can possily be done, ever, in the history of the world. It's about doing the best that you can do within the parameters defined by the people writing the cheques. And, of course, having your best be acceptible to those people, even if their idea of 'good' is different than yours. I've designed some butt- ugly sets because the director's vision was, shall we say, unique.

The next step is the really hard one - that's producing good work, to deadline, that reflects someone else's notes. I've never tried this idea myself but you might - just for the learning experience - pick one person on TriggerStreet whose review you're going to treat as 'notes,' and then do a 4-6 week (maximum) rewrite to incorporate those notes. Send that person the rewrite and see what he or she has to say.
For what it's worth...

I have had a go at executing notes, and I actually kind of like it. I don't know how I'd respond to notes given by someone I don't particularly respect, though.
