Coming back from England, Eleanor met her soon-to-be husband, Franklin, on a train. Over the next couple of months, they fell in love and eventually got married. They did everything together in the beginning; including taking long walks, and taking long carriage rides through the woods. Franklin was her husband and her best friend. However, as the years went by, so did their bond and friendship. By the end of both of their lives, they would rarely speak.
Franklin political career started in 1910, when he ran for state legislature. He traveled all around campaigning, and he gave ten speeches a day. He eventually won state legislature, which was his first public office by 1,140 votes. Before this job, he rewarded with the position of Assistance Secretary of the Navy. Franklin always wanted this job, and like his father Theodore Roosevelt, he would use this position as a spring board to the presidency. Next, the worst thing happened to Eleanor, she found love letters from their secretary Lucy Mercer and her husband Franklin. She could not believe that Franklin would cheat on her. She thought that they had a bond with each other. The only thing that saved their marriage was that Franklin promised that he would never see Lucy Mercer. The bond and trust that the couple had for so many years was disappearing. Next, Eleanor had to keep the Roosevelt name in the political world, due to Franklin suffering from polo. This time is where she learned to be a great speaker. Louis Howe had to teach her how to develop a great speech and not to laugh while giving a speech.
Franklin Roosevelt last two positions was Governor of New York and President. During his time as Governor, Franklin and Eleanor rarely spoke. They did not have sex or even share a bed in over a decade. Sometimes they did not even stay in the same house. They both thought that the other was an affair. They did not trust each other. When Franklin won the election to be President of the United States, Eleanor did not really care. She did not wanted to quit her teaching job or even move to the White House. When they enter the White House, Eleanor just wanted to be an ordinary lady, so she would go on driving from place to place.
During Franklin presidency, the stock market had crashed and the Great Depression had started. People were suffering badly. Some people went from being millionaire to selling apples. Some families had to decide on which one of their children would go to school because they only had one pair of shoe and one uniform. These were really hard times for people everywhere. Later she lost her mother- in- law Sara who died in a coma, then a few weeks later, she lost her brother Hall, he had fell into alcohol due to his failing business and marriage. Then on the April 12, 1945, her husband Franklin died. He had served an unprecented three terms as president and was on his fourth tem when he died. He was suffering from a massive cerebral hemorrhage. When she found out about his death, she was shocked to found out that he died while he was sitting for a portrait artist, when he suddenly collapsed and the portrait was for Lucy Mercer’s daughter, and Lucy was there when Franklin collapsed. Franklin had been secretly having an affair with her again. He had broken his promised.
After Franklin death, Eleanor work hard. She would give speeches every where and was a hit every where she went. She did this until her death on November 7, 1962. She died from bone marrow tuberculosis.
