In the active voice, the subject is the agent, that is the doer of the action specified by the verb:
'I ate the whole bag of Oreos.'-- 'I' is the subject and the agent, the one who 'ate'.
In the passive voice, the subject is the receiver of the action specified by the verb, and the agent may or may not be mentioned, usually in a 'by' phrase:
'The whole bag of oreos was eaten (by me)'-- here, 'the whole bag of oreos' is the subject, and is the object which is 'eaten'.

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master-- that's all.'
