Hi everyone. I hope you can help me on this one.

I was told that when we are forming passive voice sentences when there are two agents we should use the person as the subject. For example, John gave Tom a book ------> Tom was given a book by John.

So, using the sentence "John gave MTV an interview." is it right to say:

a) An interview was given by John to MTV

b) MTV was given an interview by Jonh

c)  or both?

I'm really confused with this because (using the first example again) i was told that it would be wrong to say "A book was given to Tom by John.

Can you answer this question, please?

That'll be very helpful.

Thanks

Hi,

I was told that when we are forming passive voice sentences when there are two agents we should use the person as the subject. For example, John gave Tom a book ------> Tom was given a book by John. There are not two agents here. The agent is the person performing the action, so only John is the agent.

So, using the sentence "John gave MTV an interview." is it right to say:

a) An interview was given by John to MTV

b) MTV was given an interview by Jonh

c)  or both? BOth are correct. A stresses the interview more, and B stresses 'MTV' more.

I'm really confused with this because (using the first example again) i was told that it would be wrong to say "A book was given to Tom by John. No, it's OK.

Best wishes, Clive
