Past tense vs past continous

hello guys,
can you guys help me to difference past simple vs past continous i really get confused in exercises when they are both put in a story and also the use of when and while.

i`d really appreciate it

Here is a WHILE AND WHEN link.  The uses of continuous and simple aspects follow some of these points:  generally, continuous indicates an ongoing action in the past, while the simple indicates a finished event.
