Stunned by his awful loss, John Paton's reason almost gave way for a time.

 

 

Hi,

Is it correct to interpret the bolded part in the above as "Paton almost lost his reasom once" and "for a while he was almost unreasonable?" Thanks.

It suggests to me that Paton was close to losing his mind for a while.
