In Italy, scientists showed that an octopus could learn how to perform a task by watching another octopus do it.

Hi,
Is it about the same to say "do a difficult thing" instead of "perform a task" in the above? Thanks.

"do a difficult thing" seems clumsier to me. Also, you've introduced the idea that it was "difficult", which wasn't present in the original (a task doesn't have to be difficult; it could be simple).
