Would it be, "I was a contestant on "Who Wants to be a Millionare?".

I'm asking if the period following the sentence is nessacary in both AP and "universally accepted" style.

Thanks.

There is no "universally accepted style". Everyone here has their own style. If you want to follow some specific guidelines, read some "style guides" or something, stuff for writers. Or if you write for a living, ask your boss, editor, etc. Smile [:)]

By the way, I would write --> I was a contestant on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?"

Smile [:)]

This is correct.
Firstly, it is the title of a programme and the question mark is a part of the title, so you need the full stop after in any case.  Secondly, when quoting a piece of text which ends with a question mark or an exclamation mark, the same situation applies. Generally full stops and commas are omitted from the end of quotations.
