I have been asked to submit a character reference letter to the court on behalf of a long time friend. He is seeking to have the court expunge his criminal record of a felony conviction in an effort to gain employment. Every attempt to gain employment has been thwarted by criminal background checks by potential employers. He served a term in jail and subsequent parole sucessfully with no further problems with the law. This person is trying to turn his life around and has done everything in his power to correct his wrong doings and remain a law abiding citizen. He is an educated, skilled, intelligent individual who is unable to obtain an unskilled job. I would like to assist this person regain his life and livelihood as he has proved himself to be deserving of a second chance.
I would apprecite help in writing a character reference letter to the judge. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you--J

Hi,
Please see the top post in this section. We don't write letters for people.
I do recall seeing a similar request to this several months ago. I found that by searching the Internet, I could locate a few sample letters.
In reality, you probably don't need a bunch of sample letters. All you need to do is show in detail how this person has done everything possible to rehabilitate himself and the obstacles that he faces. And probably the more letters from different people, the better.
If you do post your letter here for review, please change the name and other identifying key data to protect people's privacy.
Good luck.

Criminal Defence Articles Make a positive impact with personal reference letters
by Tushar K. Pain
Letters of personal reference are typically used in the sentencing process. They provide the court insight into you and your reputation as a member of the community. I am trying to write a reference for a 24 year old man who has turned his life around. He has been currently working consistantly for the last 8 months on various waterways on a ship, but with his previous record his twix card application was turned down by homdland security. We are attempting to go before a judge and I want my letter of reference to help him as much as possible. I have known this boy all his life.
