Here is my essay: The story "Oedipus the King" is a impressive story about a erring human who is in search for his identity in a mystery labyrinth. Sophocles created monumental work, because it's timeless. The past interferes with the present, and the future is not dependent on a human, but it's remaining in hands of destiny, malicious doom. Sophocles' drama is about a huge strength and role of destiny. This doom controlling men's destiny, invariable, irreversible and independent from a human. "Oedipus the King" is a story about suffering, human's helplessness towards gods, impossibility in changing destiny, man's dramas like leaving own child, death or forbidden love and tragedy of human-marionette in hands of higher power.
In this story, gods send many surprises to Oedipus, he suffers from bad lack and it seems like destiny revenges oneself not knowing the reason for it and its goal. In times of ancient Greece it was believed, that destiny depended on gods and every born child was ascribed to a specific scenario.
Gods were the ones, who wrote man's essence of life. In this case, we see that more a person tries to run away from a destiny, the faster and closer he comes along it. But if Oedipus didn't try to escape from what was written to him, he wouldn't get to know living in Thebes, he would not have his own family.
He was a good ruler, loving husband and a great father. By leaving his parents and by abandoning forever place, where he grew up he took a risk of fighting with his destiny. It was a very hard decision for him and to do it he had lots of courage. By this gesture he commanded loved he had for people who raised him. Unfortunately, he didn't face this challenge. Without knowing it, he killed his father and married his mother. After he he was told what he'd done, he realized that it's impossible to deviate from a life path already assigned. Every effort he put to change gods' decision was needless.
No matter how hard Oedipus tried, he could not take away a curse throwned on him years before. It's not possible to change higher power's plans. In everybody's life there are ups and downs, and if we didn't experience bad moments and painful feelings, we would never appreciate those good feelings and happy times.
Very often the fear from misfortune is bigger than itself. In this story, very often chorus emphasizes uncertainty and delusiveness of our existence on this Earth. From this writing comes a pessimistic message: People don't have any impact on their life, because they are only people.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
