Allo Smile [:)]

I translated a news article about a Live 8 concert.  Please, help me to correct it.

My translation:
The only African concert did not attract the crowd>
>About 8000 people went to lace>Johannesburglace> for the concert Live 8 organized in the eve of the G8 in lace>Scotlandlace> and asked a cancellation of the debt of African countries and a doubling of aid to the continent. In spite of the small interest, the only African concert can be proud of having received a distinguished (important) guest: Nelson Mandella.
From our correspondent of lace>Johannesburglace>>>
“Tata, Tata!”, scanted the crowd at the apparition on the lace>Newtonlace> stage, in lace>Johannesburglace> downtown , of the fragile figure of the most well-known grandfather of the world, Nelson Mandela.  “I said I retrieved from public life, I should not be here”, joked Nelson Mandela before sending a call to the G8 leaders who are meeting this week in lace>Scotlandlace>. “You have the opportunity to stop a crime against the humanity”, said he to them. “Overcome poverty is not an act of charity, it is a justice. Where there is poverty, there is no freedom,” added he.

Thank you very much,

The only African concert did not attract a crowd

About 8000 people went to Johannesburg for the Live 8 concert organized for the eve of the G8 conference in Scotland, asking for the cancellation of the debt of African countries and a doubling of aid to the continent.  In spite of the lack of interest, the only African concert can be proud of having received a distinguished guest-- Nelson Mandela.

From our correspondent in Johannesburg [no italics!]:

“Tata, Tata!”, chanted the crowd at the appearance, on the Newton stage in downtown Johannesburg, of the fragile figure of the best-known grandfather in the world, Nelson Mandela.  “I said I retired from public life; I should not be here”, joked Mandela, before sending a call to the G8 leaders who are meeting this week in Scotland.  “You have the opportunity to stop a crime against humanity”, he said to them.  “Overcoming poverty is not an act of charity, it is justice. Where there is poverty, there is no freedom,” he added.

...the Live 8 concert organized for the eve of the G8 conference in Scotland

Hi Mister Micawber, does it suggest something else from  the phrase 'on the eve of '

Thanks.

Yes.  The concert was not 'organized' on the eve, but 'held' on the eve; it was organized some time before, 'for' (performance on) the eve.

Thanks to Mister Micawber and K.O. for your helps.

First revised text:

The only African concert did not attract a crowd
About 8000 people went to Johannesburg for the Live 8 concert held on the eve of the G8 conference in Scotland, asking for the cancellation of the debt of African countries and a doubling of aid to the continent.  In spite of the lack of interest, the only African concert can be proud of having received a distinguished guest-- Nelson Mandela.

From our correspondent in Johannesburg
“Tata, Tata!”, chanted the crowd at the appearance, on the Newton stage in downtown Johannesburg, of the fragile figure of the best-known grandfather in the world, Nelson Mandela.  “I said I retired from public life; I should not be here”, joked Mandela, before sending a call to the G8 leaders who are meeting this week in Scotlandlace. “You have the opportunity to stop a crime against humanity”, he said to them.  “Overcoming poverty is not an act of charity, it is justice. Where there is poverty, there is no freedom,” he added.

On second thought, the commas in the second paragraph after 'appearance' and after 'Johannesburg' should be deleted: they are unnecessary and they slow down the reading of the text.  Also, delete the lacy ending of 'Scotlandlace'.

Otherwise, it looks fine, SFB.
