Action housing is located in Pittsburgh, PA and serves mainly the Allegheny county , Washington County, and Westmoreland County. The organization started in 1957 and to this day, it’s still going strong. It’s mission is to help empower people to build safe affordable housing and help better themselves through education and employment opportunities. A statement was made at one of annual the meetings in 1958 by Richard King Mellon "I believe an urban center, such as Pittsburgh, does not achieve true greatness until its people are well housed--regardless of how many new office towers, expressways and industrial plants are built."
While interviewing Jonathan Zimmerman I was delighted to find out the many programs available through Action Housing. He informed me on each program(s) guidelines and how each of them are funded. Some are funded through the government while others receive funding from other charitable organizations. Three of the many program(s) made available through Action Housing are The Winterization Program, The Family Savings Account Program, and Mortgage Assistant Program . The Weatherization Program helps people insulate and repair their homes at no cost to them. The only requirement is they most have little to no income. The purpose of the program is to reduce the costs of the participants utility bills. To receive help from this program you must fill out an application and send it to Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED). The next program I want to explain more about is called The Family Savings Account Program. This program is an exceptional way for low to moderate income citizens to save money for cars, homes, and their education. It matches whatever you put into the savings account. For example, if you deposit 1,000 into the savings account you have through Action Housing the organization will then match the deposit giving you a total account balance of 2,000. The only requirement for this program is that you attend a class on “Financial Literacy” to learn more about credit repair and saving money. The last program I wish to speak about is The Mortgage Assistant Program. The mission of this program is to help families who are in danger of losing their home due to foreclosure obtain the funds necessary to pay the mortgage. The only requirement for this program is that you are unemployed.
These are just a few of the many programs offered by Action Housing. Besides offering a variety of helpful programs, Action Housing also offers employment opportunites to those who qualify.
