Hi!

Is it right to say :

- "She complains to him about crimes".

- "Recently deaths have been increasing drastically and TV has been emphasizing them".

Thanks,

Agatha

Hi,

Is it right to say :

- "She complains to him about crimes".

- "Recently deaths have been increasing drastically and TV has been emphasizing them".

Both are correct grammatically. But I'd more naturally say them this way.

- "She complains to him about crime". This makes the term more general.

- "Recently the number of deaths has been increasing drastically and TV has been emphasizing them".

Thank you very much, Clive. By the way, so if I write : "Crime have been increasing drastically in these last years " , is it OK?

Best wishes,

Agatha

"Recently the number of deaths has been increasing drastically and TV has been emphasizing them".

Clive wrote the above.

I am a bit curious about the words 'has been' here.

You strictly reckon the words ' the number of deaths' as a singular unit.

It will not be wrong to reckon as a plural unit too.

Please tell me; I am just guessing.

Hi,

"Recently the number of deaths has been increasing drastically and TV has been emphasizing them".

I am a bit curious about the words 'has been' here.

You strictly reckon the words ' the number of deaths' as a singular unit. In a sense, yes, but I prefer to look at it that the subject is the singular word 'number'.

It will not be wrong to reckon as a plural unit too. I understand your thinking, but 'have' sounds incorrect here to me.

Best wishes, Clive
