Title
In such an infinite universe, I find it very difficult to seem significant. Once I consider the fact that I am less than a grain of sand when compared to just the stars I can see, I feel as if my life holds no meaning. Even here on Earth, it is difficult for me to feel important. With the billions of people that inhabit the world, how am I supposed to have a profound impact on society? Despite being out-numbered and extremely tiny, I do realize that I make a difference in my own little world to the people that I know and love. Without my existence, the people that I am close to could be living a completely different life. Just through knowing these people I have influenced them in some way, changing their lives for better or for worse. In that sense I make an intense difference in the world.
Just walking outside at night, especially away from large cities, I become very humbled by the thousands of stars in the night sky. Seeing these bright rays in the dark sky completely mystifies me. Even thought the stars only appear as small specks of light, I know that they are indeed massive when compared to myself. But when these stars are compared to the vastness of the universe, even they become tiny and no more than a mere speck of light. Everything that surrounds my world is so incredibly huge. I often wonder how something as small as myself can have any weight at all in such a massive amount of space.
By breaking the scale down and just looking at the world in which I am living on, it becomes difficult to feel substantial. Day to day people are born, people die, people are happy, and people are sad. Myself, as one person, get caught up in this pattern of daily life along with the rest of sociey. I am only one person out of the several billion people on this planet. For me to influence the world at all seems unachievable. All I can do is exist and have little to no impact on the world. I, as a single person, am greatly outnumbered and overpowered by the masses. Alone I can achieve very little, not only my life, but also in the life of others on this planet.
Even with these thoughts of insignificance, if I continue to trim my point of view down to a smaller scale, I realize that I am extremely crucial to the ones that I know and love. Every person that I know, have known, or have met changes me in some way, even if it I don’t realize it. The people that I know make me who I am. Therefore it is safe to say that I too influence people and make them who they are. If I just slightly influence a person in his or her life, I could potentially change the outcome his or her future. Everything I say to someone, whether it is positive or negative, impacts him or her in some way. It is impossible for me to know just how much I affect people, but I do know that I have the power to do so.
Despite being infinitely small and extremely outnumbered, my impact in this world is quite noteworthy. I have the power to change the lives of the people I speak to. This change in their lives could be huge or it could be small, but it shows the importance of myself in this world. Just because I am a mere grain of sand in a sea of stars, does not mean I cannot change the people and world around me.
