This is the statement for a PhD in Finance app. The directives ask for "career plans", "personal objectives", and "reasons for pursuing a PhD". Please take into account that applicants also hand in our resumes (the reason some information may seem unsupported). Thank you.

I aim to become a researcher and teacher at a research-oriented, leading business school. Coming from a region of vigorous economic growth but also of major competitiveness and sustainability issues, I am highly motivated to research the financial decisions that determine the long-term success of firms, in particular the investment decision and capital structure. I wish to deepen my expertise in portfolio theory, asset allocation, and the models of the debt-equity mix in the real world and their applicability. I strongly believe that the impressive academics and distinguished faculty of YYYY School of Business will help me develop the background in investments, corporate finance, and quantitative methods necessary to succeed in my goal.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my previous research experience and look forward to refining my theoretical base and research-related skills. On my current job, and on my own initiative, I have researched the juridical and tax stability, and tax return opportunities that current local legislation offers to investors. In order to gain an appropriate understanding of these topics, I reviewed the core of the mining law and related matters. I have presented to the board of directors a report with my findings and conclusions, which will be put in practice once the company passes from exploration to exploitation phase.

In my thesis at HHHH University I researched the relationship between number of patents produced and market value of telecommunication firms. I enjoyed developing the theoretical model, collecting data from Datastream, the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and a number of other sources, and testing the fit of theory on a practical situation. I plan to complement the capabilities and  knowledge acquired in my research experience and two graduate degrees with my solid quantitative and analytical aptitudes refined in my undergraduate years to develop successfully my doctoral studies and career as a professor of finance.

The process of entering academia involves thorough preparation in both teaching and research methodologies, subjects I was glad to find in the foundation courses of the program. I was also pleased to notice that I am familiar with a great deal of the content of the corresponding research track. I intend to use this favorable circumstance to expand my command of regression analysis and statistics. Overall, I am very well impressed with the Ph.D. program for several reasons: the ample and varied curriculum, the balance between teaching and research, and the accomplished faculty of leading business professors and their diverse research interests. In particular, I would be honored to collaborate with Professors JJJJ and PPPP on equity allocation and capital structure, respectively.

I believe I can contribute greatly to the diversity and advancement of the Ph.D. program. I have developed sound teamwork, communication, time-management, and problem-solving skills in my experience in both the small firm and the large multinational. I have lived in two markedly different societies and frankly appreciate multiculturalism.

I am confident that I have the drive, aptitudes, and experience required in the Finance Ph.D. program, and look forward to joining YYYY School of Business.
