You mean strategies?

My school teacher said an object is always regarded as plural if it is made up of more than one part but USUALLY useless if broken into two or more identical components .. like scissors. She emphasized usually ... like a handicaped person may actually use only one part of the pants .. it is still pants not pant ... interestingly spectacles is not the plural of a monocle ... although if you had powered glass for only one eye, and your specs broke and you decide to stick only the required glasspiece to your eye, either you are wearing a broken spectacles, or a monocle but not a spectacle.

Gloves was another debate: Always a pair of gloves for the two you need, each one is still a plural because each has five fingers, thats why it is plural not because you need two ... but it is still a glove-compartment not a gloves-compartmentSmile [:)], shoes, socks, briefs fall into the same category!

Plural form of glasses

In some languages like classical and modern Hebrew this form is called dualis because it refers to things that are only found as a pair, but English as far as I know counts them as plurals. British English at least doesn't talk about "a scissors" but a pair of scissors".
