In front of us is a [police] roadblock. Slow down!

1. Is the word police needed or is it understood?

2. Can I replace roadblock with checkpoint and retain its meaning?

Thanks in advance!

1-- I think you need 'police'.  Out of context, it could me the army or the gas company.
2-- No.  Checkpoints and roadblocks are different beasts.
