Sorry - I'm new to this forum and can't figure out how else to post except to reply to your post.  One more predicate noun/adjective question.  The grammar book gives examples like:

Predicate noun:  The cat is black.
Predicate adj:   The cat is mangy.

But then the very first sentence where I'm supposed to identify p. noun or p. adj. says:

The teacher was a tall man.

So is there both a p. adj and a p. noun there or is the adjective not considered predicate?  None of the examples had a noun being modified by an adjective, so I really don't know what to put!

Thanks,
Emily

Hi,

One more predicate noun/adjective question.  The grammar book gives examples like:

Predicate noun:  The cat is black. 'Black' is an adjective here, not a noun.
Predicate adj:   The cat is mangy.

But then the very first sentence where I'm supposed to identify p. noun or p. adj. says:

The teacher was a tall man. I'd say that the predicate consists of the phrase 'a tall man', which is made up of a noun qualified by an adjective. I don't see why you shouldn't call these two words 'a predicate noun' and 'a predicate adjective'.

So is there both a p. adj and a p. noun there or is the adjective not considered predicate?  None of the examples had a noun being modified by an adjective, so I really don't know what to put!

Best wishes, Clive

Hi,

Consider a sentence like Mary bought a car.

Can you find the predicate? What is it?

basicly predacate nominative is a noun in the predacate. so first you have to find the subject.

Example- Our teacher is Ms. Nancy.

                           ^            ^

                       subject       pred. nom.

predicate adjective is an adjective in the predicate.

Example- Ms. Nancy is our teacher.

                   ^                        ^

               subject                pred. adj.

so a predicate adjective or nominative is a word that tells whom or what the subject is.

p.s. i'm only 12 so cut me some slack on spelling!!!!!!!!! Smile [:)]

also remember that predicate nominative/adjectives are only for linking verbs, if it is an action verb than you call them direct/ indirect objects.

Example:

I gave Bob 5 dollars

Gave is the verb

Bob is the indirect object

5 dollars is the direct object

this is because you GAVE 5 dollars and you GAVE them to Bob
