He died of cancer. He died from cancer. Which is correct?

To die OF a disease seems to be the most common preposition.  I just opened my (American) newspaper and read:  died of cancer .... died of old age and a brain tumor....died of congestive heart failure....

When you name the disease, use "of."

But when describing the cause, "from" is also common.

He died from/of a bullet through the brain.
