Hello,

Is there any difference in meaning between the two sentences below?
Does it have anything to do with me being the pilot or a passenger? Or does it matter?

Have you ever flown in a helicopter?
Have you ever flown by a helicopter?

Thanks.

Have you ever flown in a helicopter?    OK

Have you ever flown by a helicopter?    Incorrect, but you can say "Have you ever flown by helicopter?."

I would take the first to be asking if I had ever flown in a helicopter even if only on a tour of a city, for example, as opposed to flying to a destination. The second implies flying to a particular destination. Although, depending on the exact context, they could both be used in either situation.

Hi,

Please note that using different prepositions will give you different meanings.

In the second sentence, “by” is also possible, but the context needs to be changed.

The drivers injured in the 5 car pile-up were flown to a nearby hospital by medical helicopter. This means they were transported to the hospital by a means of a helicopter.
