Hi.Does anybody know why motion prepositions  have deletable objects? Is it  true in all cases? Or does it depend on the meaning of the prep.?

Hi Qgaby,

Can you please provide a few examples of the kind of sentences you are asking about?

Thanks, Clive

Hi Clive!

An example of  a prep of motion could be:

The fullback is through the line

In which" through" is the prep and " the line"  may be deletable. Why is it like this??? When  the object is deleted, is the preposition  " through" an adverb?

I love the quotation you 've written about tango, although, I'm not a tango fan.

Hi,

The fullback is through the line.

The fullback is through. (This also has another, informal meaning, ie The fullback is finished, fired, has lost his job) but I don't think that is what you are asking about.)

This just seems like ellipsis to me. 'Through' is still a preposition. It's like

1. He walked across the road.

2. He came to the road. He walked across.

It's OK as long as I understand what is omitted.

Best wishes, Clive
