Prepositions are really tough, and it's impossible to give you a rule that will simply work for you in all situations.

I'm afraid you're going to have to learn which prepositions to use in which situations individually.

The kitten is in the drain. (implies inside something)

The candles are on the table. (implies on the surface of something)

Could you please try to write  a couple of sentences so that members can assist you further.
