Hi,

Can you tell me what is the difference of using "of" and "to" in the below?

President of the United States eg Obama
President to the United States

an ambassador of the United States eg sent from the US to France
an ambassador to the United States eg sent from France to the US

'of' indicates 'belonging to', 'connected to'. So, #1 and #3 are natural.

'to' indicates 'sent there to perform the role'. #4 is natural, but #2 is not.

Best wishes, Clive
