Hi ,

Can anyone let me know if the "it" usage is correct in the following sentence ??

While more than 300 rivers drain into it, Siberia's lake Baikal holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, which is more than all the North American Great Lakes combined.

Also, is the following statement correct ?

More than 300 rivers drain into Siberia's Lake Baikal, which holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, more than all the North American Great Lakes combined.

thanks,
Sharad

I am not a geologist, nor am I a linguist, still I am interfering.
Your sentences are correct grammatically, but I am not sure if they are correct factually.
The lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world.
What your sentence states  may be true.

Sharad, while both sentences are seem correct, the use of the word ‘while’ in the first one implies that lake Baikal holds 20 percent of the world’s fresh water despite the fact more than 300 rivers drain into it.

Yes the use of 'it' in the first example is ok.

Both the sentences are a little ambiguous though, as the last poster pointed out.

More than 300 rivers drain into Siberia's Lake Baikal, which holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, more than all the North American Great Lakes combined. - this sentence sounds as though this lake has more rivers draining into it than all the North American Great Lakes combined.

The way to phrase this sentence to give the meaning you require is:
With more than 300 rivers draining into it, Siberia's lake Baikal holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, which is more than all the North American Great Lakes combined.

Hi Nona,

Quick question.. Isn't the highlighted part of sentence left hanging, making it ungrammatical ?? Or is this OK usage as per grammar ? If so, please explain..

More than 300 rivers drain into Siberia's Lake Baikal, which holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, more than all the North American Great Lakes combined.
