How to pronounce sound in cat,hat,jack,lack ... æ

Hi,
I can't figure out how to pronounce this sound, I've read [link] and [link] ,I have also heard lot of words on wiktionary and howjsay.com . I've been trying to say it, but I'm not able to do so. I substitute it with sound in 'bed' or with sound in 'but', but longer.

Any hints? thank you.

There are also pronunciations at the on-line Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

You've probably read more about it than I have now, but as a start, I would suggest that you laugh (open your mouth vertically more than bet, horizontally more than but) when you say BAT.
