Whinzel, I can't type or copy all phonetic symbols, so, you have to relate my explanations to the real symbol, I hope you get everything, check the symbols with your notes, books or on the net.

I've added the words pronounced by Hitchhiker at first place of each line.

/i:/ seat, sheep, green, eat, cheap, feel, clean, please

/I/ sit, ship, his, in, ill, before, ring, this, is, bill, fish

/u:/ do, boot, blue, two, you, group, shoe, loose, moved

/u/ put, look, could, would, , book, good,

/e/ rent, bed, leg, set, very, age, well, desk, get, yes

/schwa sound/ (it is represented by an inverted "e", I can't type it) the, at, to, about (the a), another (the a and the e), again (the first a), pleasure (the last e), o'clock (the first o), consistent (the o and the e), five (the e)

/3:/ work, burn, turn, word, thursday, church, bird

/o:/ (note here that the symbol is not an complete "o" , it is like an inverted "c", I can't type it either) talk, caught, cause, yours, door, port, tall, ball, law, ward, fall, before (the o), call

/ae/ manpower, bad, have, hasn't, hand, man, carry, angry, sat, that, cat, married, Spanish, travel

/A/ (the correct symbol doesn't have the - inside the letter, get me?, it is like an inverted V) cut, just, couple, much, front, enough, come, young, sunm number, double, bus

/a:/ chart, calm, start, march, after, heart, park, glass, aren't, car

/inverted a/ (imagine an "a" looking at left instead at right, but an "a" typed with Comic Sans font) operate, hot, clock, what, job, pot, gone, on

DIPHTHONGS

/ei/ wage, make, take, day, face

/aI/ time, bite, mine, wine, light, fire, five

/au/ now, house, round, mouth

/I+schwa/ clear, here, hear, deer

/u+schwa/ secure, poor, tour, edure

/inverted a+I/ coin, boy, oil

/e+schwa/ fair, there, where, chair

/shwa+u/ phone, no, open, nose, ago, so, goes, window (the last ow), know, sew

I hope it is useful.
Good luck.

Hello, Winhzel,

It's somewhat hard to teach slight diffences of similarly pronouced sounds without the help of audible demonstrations, but with a little more attention you may get comparable help through detailed explanations. Allow me to try it.

1. long vowel sounds : /a:/ /e:/ /i:/ /o:/ /u:/

1)/a:/ dark/da:rk/ park/pa:rk/
2)/e:/ There's no long /e:/ sound in English. When "e" in alphabet becomes a long sound, it takes either of following two sounds.
(a) /i:/ as "e" in lethal
(b) /ei/ as "e" in saute, the stressed "e" in Mercedes
3) /i:/ Alphabet "i" seldome sounds like this except some foreign words: i.e. Giza/'gi:za/
Mostly "e" or "ee" does the job. cede/si:d/ seek/si:k/
4) /o:/ Theoretically, no independent /o:/ sounds! It comes either as a diphthong/ou/ in go, or a 'reversed c' shape (International Phonetic Alphabets) in talk/tc:k/.

5) /u:/ Uganda/u:'ga:nda:/ *British, juke/Jju:k/ food/fu:d/

2. short vowel sounds: /a/ /e/ /i/ /o/ /u/

1) /a/ pot/pat/ pond/pand/
2) /e/ send/send/ bet/bet/
3) /i/ sin/sin/ sick/sik/
4) /o/ Again, theioretically there is no short independent /o/ sound in English. Aphabet "o" has a variety of sounds regardless of being long or short.
(a) /ou/ no
(b) /a/ dot
(c) reversed c in dog
(d) come *symbo with no parallel bar in "A"
(e) /u:/ tomb/tu:m/
(e) schwa sound in second "o" in economy
(f) silent "o" in iron
(g) possibly even /i/ sound in gaol/jeil/ *British

I hope it helps.
