The "s" in "island" is a silent. Another example of it is the "s" in "isle", but they are not related, and there are no set rules for this.
However, a "t" as a silent appears somewhat in regularity in words where it emerges in the center of three consecutive consonents.
e.g. rustle, whistle, bristle, etc. cf. soften, christen
