Hi, According to my dictionary, the second g in the word gigantic is pronounced as g in the word go. But I remember hearing it pronounced as j in the word jar. Are there two pronunciations for this word, or I'm mistaken? Thanks in advance

Hi, Although it is possible that the second g is pronounced like the j in jar in certain accents, it seems doubtful to me. I've never heard it pronounced that way and I've heard quite a lot of accents, particularly British, in my time.

Could you let us know the name of the dictionary? I cannot believe that your dictionary has given the wrong information.

Yoong Liat, it doesn't sound to me as if there's any problem with the dictionary, which says that the second "g" should be hard. The original poster is saying that he has heard the word pronounced with the second (and presumable also the first) "g" soft -- as "jijantic." I think the dictionary is correct, and either his memory is wrong or he heard people pronouncing it incorrrectly.

I read wrongly. I thought that he was saying the first 'g'. Now I know he was referring to the second 'g'. What a blunder!

Ah, well, as penance for reading too quickly, you can pour the first round of drinks for us tonight. Heaven knows I'd enjoy one right now.
