When using quotation marks with a person's nickname, is it proper to place a following comma outside the quotation marks?

For instance: "The guys at the bar were all regulars, but the Nichols triplets - "Chuck", "Pete", and "Skinny" - had seniority over everyone else."

In the US, they go inside. In the UK, they go outside. But I would not use quotation marks around those names. There's no reason to.
