Hi, what does the line in bold mean? Thanks.

Their constant arguments were putting a strain on their marriage.

A fish scale is technically a strain gauge.  It measures tension.  If I pull hard on a rope which is fastened to a tree, I'm putting a strain on the rope.  It may break.  (It's actually the opposite of pressure.)   The arguments threaten to pull the marriage apart.
