put it in quotation marks too?

Hi,

Sometimes I get confused whether to put the article 'the' in quotation marks when you want to highlight a certain phrase. Help,

I think this might be a relevant example case:

So what is the "first and chief article of protestantism"? Scriptually, it goes like ...

Should I include 'the'? Instinctively, I think not but cannot grasp the basis for my decision.

If the 'the' is a part of the original quotation, then enclose it; if you have added the 'the' yourself for grammatical correctness, then place it outside the quotation marks.
