The large amber windows were open, and the fish swam in, just as the swallows fly into our houses when we open the windows, excepting that the fishes swam up to the princesses, ate out of their hands, and allowed themselves to be stroked.

what is the meaning of ate out of their hands?

It means just that. The fish ate food held within the hands of the princesses.

I'd just like to add a comment.

In this example, ate out of their hands has a literal meaning. However, unless you have a pet fish that you feed like this, usually when you encounter these words, they will not be used literally.

eg The boss is eating out of Tom's hand means that the boss believes that all Tom's ideas are great, that Tom is a wonderful guy, the boss will do anything Tom wants.

I like your royal palace in the water. It reminds me of the story of the siren. There are the princesses, the beautiful pets like swallows and the fishes.I think if the princesses want to invest, there is an opportunity to have a good stroke of business. To me, I have a small strip for my dowry and land is more and more increased and I didn't feel regret to buy it to go abroad.
