MARY GEARIN: This band of bedraggled 13 year olds is slogging out a path everyone is told to follow, the long trek to environmental awareness.
They've been sent into the forest on
something of a modern boot camp, to slap lazy, wasteful habits out of city kids, and reveilles always come at dawn.
MARY GEARIN: Nearly 2 weeks later the adventure is over. The students return to school
weary, a little smelly, and their opinions divided.
MARY GEARIN: Do you think you
learnt a lot about the environment?

STUDENT: Yeah, I think I did, about, like, conservation, things like that.

STUDENT: I just though it would be a bit more, basing on fun, and not trying to save the environment as much as it did, but it was very good and it taught us a lot
.

Hi what is the meaning of the part  in bold please?

ThanksSmile [:)]

Hi,

I just though it would be a bit more, basing on fun, and not trying to save the environment as much as it did, but it was very good and it taught us a lot.

The speaker is only 13, so it's not a carefully considered and a well-formed sentence. He means this.

I thought the trip would focus more on fun for us, and less on the serious matter of saving the environment, which is where the focus actually was.

Best wishes, Clive
