I) I encoutered these questions in SAT preparation

1) IF y varies inversely to x and y = 8 when x =3, what is the value of y when x=4?(Answer :6)

--> I don't understand what the question means, how can 8 and 3 can be inverse?

2)A corporation triples its annual bonus to 50 of its employees. What percent of the employees' new bonus is the increase? (Answer: 66 2/3 %)

--> This is the problem, I don't understand what the question means, triples anual bonus to 50???? Then how can it be 66 2/3%

II) 3)What is the differences between solve and resolve?

4) What is the differences  between charitable trust and charitable foundation?

5) What does it mean by "cheap palor tricks" - I encountered this word when I watch Batman begin the movie

And thanks in advance 0

Hi,

) I encoutered these questions in SAT preparation

1) IF y varies inversely to x and y = 8 when x =3, what is the value of y when x=4?(Answer :6)

--> I don't understand what the question means, how can 8 and 3 can be inverse?

I'll leave this to someone else.

2)A corporation triples its annual bonus to 50 of its employees. What percent of the employees' new bonus is the increase? (Answer: 66 2/3 %)

--> This is the problem, I don't understand what the question means, triples anual bonus to 50???? Then how can it be 66 2/3%

You are not reading the first sentence correctly. A corporation ( triples its annual bonus ) to (50 of its employees). eg Consider 50 employees who get bonuses. Last year, each received a bonus of $20. This year, each received $60.

II) 3)What is the differences between solve and resolve?

solve - focuses on finding a solution.

resolve - focuses on clearing up or settling a problem.

4) What is the differences  between charitable trust and charitable foundationSorry, I don't have time to deal with this right now.Smile

5) What does it mean by "cheap parlor tricks" - I encountered this word when I watch Batman begin the movie trite amateur magician tricks.

Best wishes, Clive

If two values that have an inverse relationship with each other, as one goes up, the other goes down. For example, at constant temperature, the pressure and volume of a gas will have inverse values. If you increase the volume, you'll have less pressure, and vice versa. In the orignal question, on of the values when up from 3 to 4, so the other had to go down from 8. Presumably, 6 was the only answer that was LESS than 8? There'd be no way to know from the information give if it were 6, 5, or 2. It just had to be less than 8.

IF y varies inversely to x and y = 8 when x =3, what is the value of y when x=4?

If y varies inversely to x, then, by definition, xy = k (where k is a constant).

So multiplying y by x always has to equal the same constant number.  That's what inverse relationships are.

We know that 8 times 3 is in the desired relationship (because the question tells us so).

So we know that the desired constant in this example is 24.

So the question becomes: What number times 4 is in the same relationship?   That is, what number times 4 also equals 24?

Let me know if you need further clues.

IF y varies inversely to x and y = 8 when x =3, what is the value of y when x=4?
There is an alternate way to do this.  As GG said, the inverse relationship means if one value goes up, the other goes down.  They go up and down by related ratios -- inverted ratios to be specific.

x goes up from 3 to 4.  The ratio of the increment is 4 to 3.  (4/3)  3 times 4/3 = 4.

y goes down from 8 to what?  The ratio of the decrement is the inverse of 4 to 3, that is, 3 to 4. (3/4)  8 times 3/4 = ???

3/4 of 8 is 6.

A corporation triples its annual bonus to 50 of its employees. What percent of the employees' new bonus is the increase?
The number 50 is there to distract you.  The number of employees who received the bonus has nothing to do with the percent increase.

Forget the number 50, and think of the problem this way:

A corporation increases its annual bonus by multiplying it by 3. (by tripling it)

What percent is the increase compared to the total new bonus?

Original amount:

XXXXXXXXXX

Tripled amount (Original plus increase):

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

One-third of the new amount is the original amount; two-thirds of the new amount is increase.

Expressed as percentages, one-third is 33.33 1/3%, two-thirds is 66.66 2/3%
