Can somebody please tell me when to use single & double quotes with examples. Thanks in advance.

Please help me correct my sentence: I attended the seminar in Delhi and Ms.Clair recommended me to your college. Does this sound right?

One of the uses for quotes is for when somebody is talking.

Jeremy said, "I'm going to the store."

Single quotes are used inside quotes.

Andy said, "I was talking to Jeremy and he said, 'I'm going to the store.'"

I attended the seminar in Delhi and Ms.Clair recommended me to your college.

Maybe elaborate on what you were recommended for.

Andy said, "I was talking to Jeremy and he said, 'I'm going to the store.'" I would place the full stop mark outside the quotation:
Andy said, "I was talking to Jeremy and he said, 'I'm going to the store'".

The full stop inside or outside the quotation is one of the differences between British and US English. Brit English puts it inside the quote marks.

I attended the seminar in Delhi and Ms Clair recommended me to your college. - Ms Clair told the college that I would be a good student/tutor/employee/whatever.

I attended the seminar in Delhi and Ms Clair recommended your college to me. - Ms Clair told me that the college is a good one.

(no full stop after Ms as it is not an abbreviation).

Thanks for the responses. I've seen sentences in which some words use single & double quotes. What's that for? THanks.
