reed (read)           red (read)               red (read)

spred (spread)     spred (spread)       spred (spread)

If you remember the pronunciation of 'spread' you should have no problem with 'read'.

I don't understand what you are saying about spread. In present tense (and continuous) it's reed. I am reeding, Jim reeds well for a first-grader. Not redding or reds.

      past                       past participle

      red (read)               red (read)

     spred (spread)       spred (spread)

New2grammar asked whether he should say, "I have red (read)" or "I have reed (read)." He was confused by the past participle. That's why I told him that the past participle of 'spread' is pronounced as 'spred'.

Finally I told him, "If you remember the pronunciation of 'spread' (spred) you should have no problem with 'read' (red).

Yes, but the present of "spread" is also "spred" - so I was confused. While "read" changes from reed to red, "spread" is "spred" all the time.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Now, I know it is 'red'.

Yoong Liat, I have a question for you which is not related to my original post.

He was confused by the past participle. That's why I told him that the past participle of 'spread' is pronounced as 'spred'.

Do you remember what CalifJim (I think was him) told us on verbs following a past tense verb though they are factual? I'm not sure whether you read the thread, but basically in that thread CalifJim said usually after a past tense verb, past tense verbs are used. But I have a tendency to use present tense after 'told' especially when I want to highlight facts. I hope that this is acceptable in writing as I find myself doing it naturally. Sad [:(]

I'm glad that you can now remember that the past participle of read (reed) is pronounced 'red'.

He was confused by the past participle. That's why I told him that the past participle of 'spread' is pronounced as 'spred'.

I believe you're wondering why 'told' (past tense) is followed by 'is' (present tense) in the above sentence. The reason for 'is' being used is that it is a fact that the past participle of 'spread' is pronounced as 'spred'.

The teacher said, "The world is round."

The teacher said that the world is round. ('is' because it is a fact that the world is round)

I hope the above helps.
