When I first came to the UK last September, there were many sights I came across that made me think deeply about my own country. The Underground tube network, its complexity, the length of its history, the depth at which many tubes operate, the self-service ticketing system at railway stations, the large and sophisticated bascule London Tower Bridge. The old buildings and architecture offer breathtaking views of London that speak volumes of its heritage. This made me think how far behind my country and many other developing countries are. Now I want to endeavour to see developing countries, including mine, grow into highly developed countries and fast-forward a few decades - when it happens I want to be a part of that realisation.

The information technology world has can see some striking advancements from the earlier generation computers which made big cracking and buzzing noises, while performing equations, weighing tonnes and occupying the size of an entire room to the latest compact high speed computers and laptops. Some of the developments in the communication, media and entertainment industry include cell phones, DVDs, memory sticks, Interactive Televisions, Networks, Wireless networks, Digital cameras, handhelds-PDA and RIM pagers. Yet other epochal achievement in technology being the hard memory from 10mb in early eighties by IBM to the 129gb hard drives available nowadays on single disks. The future could bring about creation of smaller, quieter drives and drives based on new technologies such as Serial ATA. In a couple of years, the development and implementation of human microchips or 'bionic chip' that can be fit into human body to increase human efficiency and even the development of information-centric solutions that would allow all text documents, spread sheets, presentations, music files to be stored securely and centrally on a server which can be accessed from anywhere are just a few of the advances expected.

Despite the great power and promise of recent technologies, the growing concern is that these technologies can only be marvelled at, but not possessed, for the only reason that its expensive in most developing and under-developed countries. For example, in India, a commoner cannot afford Wireless Internet access or a broadband Internet connection in his home, nor can one afford a digital camera because the salaries they earn are comparatively low. With the increase of computer crime or Internet fraud, one truth is that if a mid-range firm gets hacked or comprised via the internet, they would ignore or shutdown the firm depending on the impact of the damage just because its an issue of economics and resources. With this background in mind, I want to dedicate my research efforts towards providing affordable solutions for developing countries. I hope to focus my thesis on Digital Forensics in wireless technology including 802.11x, bluetooth, GSM, etc.

Since its unveiling in the nineties, the wireless technology has become very pervasive and popular like the wired technology. Nowadays wireless technology is used for gaming, voice chat, video streaming, Geographic Information Systems, online-transaction systems. Wireless Networks particularly has become one of the most exciting developments in wireless technology with cellular and WiFi networks. Despite its popularity, an area of concern is its security. A weak or broken insecure wireless network link could be the hacker’s way into a company’s wired network. Many firms nowadays opt for wireless networks not necessarily because it’s a low-cost solution but for its ease in set-up and easy to dismantle. Unsecured wireless networks including that of home users makes internet access free for those who sniff for open networks. In this way, they can gather important information regarding the network configuration and begin to penetrate into it. In wired network, it is much more difficult to gather similar information without leaving traces of evidence. WiFi is becoming increasingly popular as the mobile phone. Public places like restaurants, building lobbies, public telephones booths, stores, shopping arcades will soon have WiFi availability. Eventually, there will be a greater demand for more pervasive hot-spots like in the case of mobile base stations. When this happens, the need for highly secure traffic flow is essential. With the increase of WiFi and the potential threats that surround it, a digital forensic solution like the ‘honeypots’ approach also needs to be explored to track hackers. By studying the emergence of these issues, we can plan better future solutions to construct a new network.

After my graduation in Bachelor of Engineering (BE) from the information science department at Bangalore University, India, I decided to do the Sun Certification in Solaris System administration. Much to my amazement, even before I could finish the certification exams I was offered a job as a system administrator in Solaris and other Unix platforms at a HP led project in Bangalore. This project involved working on Unix servers handling installation, configuration of DNS, DHCP, NFS, NIS, trouble-shooting and providing support. I later joined Wipro Ltd., a NYSE listed and top Indian firm. While at Wipro, my work involved system administration of the company Human Resource portal. It was a mission critical project as it dealt with the personnel details of the entire company. The project being of this nature I developed a deep interest in information security and computer networks. To nurture my interest, I did the CCNA certification program-Cisco Course in networking and the CheckPoint firewall program as well. And this brought me to do my master’s program in information security at ABC university. The exposure I am having now working under the guidance of Prof. Micheal Jackson and others from the Information Security Team is just amazing and I believe I’m moving forward on the career highway. Now I have begun to recognize my deep for research to complete my dream I ‘ve decided to do a research.

I am certain that my Master’s program in Information Security, industry certifications in Solaris System Administration, CCNA (Cisco) and the CheckPoint program along with my practical work experience in Unix system administration and shell programming would be a big advantage to help me in my research towards a PhD.

As a student from XXX university, I will contribute the knowledge and skills I have gained not only through study and independent research but also through co-operation with others, as I believe that inventing advanced technologies are always products of joint human efforts. I have carried out enough research about my choice of school and have applied to XXX university, because it is reputable for its research facilities & state-of-the-art facilities. I believe that I have the necessary acumen, motivation & resolve needed to succeed as a computer scientist from your school and continue to augment the high performance computing research at the XXX university.
