Do you agree with Orwell, here?

"The invasion of one' s mind by ready made phrases can only be prevented if one is constantly on guard against them, and every such phrase anaesthetises a portion of one's brain" - George Orwell - 1946.

Do you think would be useful advice for ESL/EFL students?

Hi,
No.

What are "ready made phrases"? Are they just "collocations" or "idioms"? If so, I would say they are required in the language.

More from Mr Orwell.

"This invasion of one's mind by ready-made phrases ( lay the foundations, achieve a radical transformation ) can only be prevented if one is constantly on guard against them, and every such phrase anaesthetizes a portion of one's brain."
