1. We aren't going, for the simple reason ______ we can't afford it.

2. Is there any reason _____ you can't come?

Which fits better in the blanks, why or that? Is it possible that both of them do?

I have been captivated by and lost in a fool's paradise for too long to see the truth.

"reason" and "why" should not be used together.  1) I'd use "that".  2) I'd leave it blank, but "that" would be o.k.  I'm not sure, but the word "for" in  #1 might make the difference.  There are others who are better with "rules" than I am that might explain further.

1.  Only that.  (The simple reason is that we can't afford it.  Inability to afford it IS the reason -- for not going.  It is not a question of why we can't afford it.)
2.  Either that or why.  (The reason is not that you can't come.  That you can't come is the situation for which a reason is being sought.  The question is why you can't come.  Here something unknown is the reason for inability to come.)
