Hello,

Can someone explain what "redeeming" means or what this sentence tries to tell?

Paul Schrader said that he was the rare actor who did not need to find the redeeming qualities in his characters.

Hi,

Her very good performance makes up for the fact that the rest of the movie is terrible.

to redeem something is to repurchase it. To redeem someone means to rescue them or to set them free again. Paul Schrader means by "not finding the redeeming quaties in him" that he does not have the ablility or the will to redeem anything or anyone.

Hi,

Paul Schrader said that he was the rare actor who did not need to find the redeeming qualities in his characters.

It's hard to interpret this carefully without more context,

However, it seems to mean this.

Unlike most actors, he does not try to make you like the characters he portrays.

Best wishes, Clive
