Title: The Man Of The House. But whose got his pants ?
The True Insight On Macbeths' Relationship.
It is said that a man wears the pants in the family. This means that the man is the head of the house. However, looking closer at Shakespeare’s play, this image varies during the hole play. Macbeth might be the man, but it is his wife which stays behind their deeds. Nevertheless, she also cannot bear the heavy burden of responsibility.
Macbeth’s great ambition of becoming the new Irish King was not enough to push Macbeth into a death’s path. After encounter with the witches Macbeth has directly dreadful thoughts:
(line 143) Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair,
And make my seated heart knock at my ribs,
Against the use of nature? Present fears
Are less than horrible imaginings:
My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical,
Shakes so my single state of man, that function
Is smother'd in surmise; and nothing is
But what is not.
However it is Lady Macbeth ,who shows determination and fearfulness pushing his husband into the path of the crime. Putting his manhood in doubt “When you durst do it, then you were a man; / And, to be more than what you were, you would / Be so much more the man.(l.54)” She achieves her goal. Macbeth and his wife become partners in crime. The roles are quite obvious with Lady Macbeth being the mind behind the felony and Macbeth putting her plan into live. Lady’s Macbeth words gave Macbeth the courage not only to kill his first victim. Now as King of Ireland, Macbeth kept on walking this path of death, drawn by his mistress. Unfortunately the role of the man was not to handle for Lady Macbeth. The psychological effects of their deeds, especially the first one, were too strong to handle for her. The visions of innocent blood on her hands were too strong to cope with. Finally, uncertain of her own future, she commit suicide, the easiest way to deal with the problems. On the other hand, she knew that the death from her enemies would be much more dreadful, humiliating and painftful.
Death of Lady Macbeth was the final, physical stage of downfall of the marriage. Their relationship changes already after the first murder. Both characters keep more and more distance from each other. Lackeys are being used as means of communication. After being elected as a king, Macbeth knows how to keep his throne. The role of the man goes back on Macbeth’s shoulders while he murders his possible treats to the throne. The partners in crime know , or at least think, that there is no way back after what they did. Macbeth does not stop with his terrible plans until the end. He choose, unlike his wife who chosen a cowardly solution , to continue the devastation. Also his death is much different then his wife’s. As a warrior, general, Macbeth decides to die as a soldier, on the battlefield.
Macbeth and his beloved one are truly partners in the deepest meaning of the word. Macbeth is a brave warrior and great general unfortunetaly without any influence on his wife. Moreover, she is the one too take control in the most crucial decisions. Thanks to her powerful ambition, she orders her husband to take the step onto the tragic path of disaster. The couple is united in their crimes, their ambition, their madness and also their alienation from the society. An irony of a “perfect“ marriage.
