It was him/he who gave me the gift.

I m baffled by this sentence and i think him is the answer as it is an object pronoun. But someone told me the answer should be he.

 

Please tell me why. Thanks.

Him is informally acceptable-- the objective pronouns are widely used in predicate position:  It's me!  I'm older than him, etc.  In this situation, however, the personal pronoun (he) and the relative pronoun (who) have the same referent and should appear in the same case in careful writing:  he who.
