In the meantime, I look forward to receiving your application, and remain,

          Yours sincerely,

This "remain" in a letter (from a language school) looks strange to me, but is this natural English?

This is a formal way of ending a letter in BrE and means something like - 'I continue to be' , 'I still am' yours sincerely.

It's very formal and polite. Nowadays not many people would use it.
