Hi. I came across a grammar question in a KPDS exam (a proficiency exam in Turkey). It is below:

For observers of international politics,March 1998 ----- as a month when the world's superpower relations ----- a hopeful new turn.
a) had been remembered / would have taken
b) will be remembered / may have taken
c) may be remembered / took
d) would be remembered / will have taken
e) has been remembered / would take

The answer key says that B is the correct answer, but I say C is better than B. Could you think on it?

A combination would be best, IMO:
may be remembered/may have taken
as we can't be really sure of either,
but perhaps that's too skepticalSmile [:)]

But, you're right, to me too C seems better than B.

I, too, like a combination:

will be remembered / took

In any case the will strikes me as better than the may, so I think I'd have chosen b, but c seems good, too.  In my mind will be remembered as after a date is almost a fixed expression.  It's so often written that way that one who reads a lot of English just feels instinctively that it is right, even when other similar expressions are equally grammatical.

Thanks for your repliesSmile [:)]. Actually, I found two different answer keys for the same question. A really hypothetical situation, huh. Good night for all.
