Hi there!

I'm a Dutch student who is applying for an intership at the UN. Would somebody be so kind to review my motivational letter? I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

Dear Madam, Sir,

In my search of an internship in the field of International Relations and in particular the field of corporate social responsibility, an internship at the United Nations Global Compact Office seems like a perfect match for me.

Currently I'm in my Masters year of International Relations at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands), a multidisciplinary university program that deals with the political, judicial, historical and economic aspects of International Relations. The completion of this program requires an international orientated internship on an academic level in which we can put our theoretical knowledge in to practice.

During my university years I've specialized in the European Union and in the field of International Political Economy. A course about the role of transnational corporations in International Relations made me passionate about the relation between international politics and corporate behavior. Especially the role of non- and intergovernmental organizations and their interaction with corporations took my attention. This was also one of the reasons why I've chosen to write my final thesis about power in international investment regulation. In my thesis I'm trying to figure out who had and has the power in the regulation of investments on a global level with multiple stakeholders like IGOs and NGOs. During the writing process of my thesis I've gathered a lot of insight in the position of IGOs in the process of the regulation and steering of corporate behavior.

My personal interest and ambition has always been to work in an atmosphere that not only deals with politics, but also with economics and in particular TNC behavior. An internship at Global Compact would help me to form a solid basis for my future ambitions in the field of corporate social responsibility. The voluntary and non-regulatory function of the Global Compact makes it a real challenge for me to explore the possibilities in the process of cooperation between public and private actors and I would be very willing to contribute to that. I am committed to the ten principles and the overall goals and mission of your organization and I would be honored to help proliferating your ideas and goals in my internship period.

I think that my competencies, my multidisciplinary view on international relations and my passion about the subject matter, make me a fitting candidate for an internship at the UN Global Compact office. The multidisciplinary and 'helicopter-view' perspective I am taught during my study help me to quickly and systematically deal with topics with multiple stakeholders and their interests. Secondly, my personal interest in communication and corporate communication fit well in the profile of the internship. In my opinion the right way of communication towards corporations is the key to a fruitful relation between the public and the private sector. Thirdly, the combination of my social and academic skills together with my work experience, in which I have and had to deal with responsibility, working in teams and finding creative solutions to problems, can hopefully be an added value to your organization and your mission. Also my willingness to learn and my knowledge of different languages are, in my opinion, essential for a position at the United Nations.

I hope this letter gives you a complete image of my motivation to apply for an internship at the Global Compact office. I would be willing to provide you with any additional information and in any way thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely yours,

<mod note: reformatted for you. :)>
