 Hi Anon:

"She's had such a hard time" means that life was difficult for her for a long time. Maybe she was born with poor health, maybe she had a bad accident and it took a long time (months or years) to recover.  A hard time is long and difficult with a lot of struggles before life is better.  Charles Dickens wrote a book about poor families in England titled "Hard Times". The economic depression in the 1930's caused misery and hard times for many people in many countries.

"A rotten time" is something very different.

It can mean that you went to a party and it was not fun. Maybe people were teasing you or making fun of you. Maybe you saw your girl (boy) friend with somebody else. Maybe nobody would dance with you.

It can also mean that you went on a holiday and the weather was terrible, and you caught a cold and had to spend the holiday in bed.

why are they different?”
Bad experiences take place over a longer period of time.  A period of time is not the same as an occasion.  Here are some occasions:

a party, a dance, a concert, a wedding, a vacation, an outing, a drive in the country, a visit to a friend, a movie, ...

to have a good time is to enjoy yourself (at/on an occasion); to have a pleasant experience (at/on an occasion)
not to have a good time is not to enjoy yourself (at/on an occasion)
to have a rotten time is informal, almost slang, 'not to enjoy yourself at all'.
Less like slang, you can have a terrible time.

good time

Did you have a good time at the party?
Did you have a good time on your vacation?
I had a good time last night at the rock concert.
Sally visited one of her aunts in Atlanta.  She had a good time.
Kate went to the movies last night, but she didn't have a very good time because the movie was so depressing.

rotten time  (less informally:  not ... a good time, terrible time)  You cannot use hard time or tough time for these.

We went to a wedding reception last Saturday.  We didn't know a lot of the people there, and the food was terrible, so we had a rotten time.
(We didn't have a very good time.  We had a terrible time.)
Bob and Sue took one of those cruises in the Caribbean.   Everyone on board got sick, so they had a rotten time.  (They didn't have a good time at all.  They had a terrible time.)
_____

hard time

difficulty; difficulties; trouble; troubles (while attempting to accomplish a task)  tough time may substitute, but it is more like slang.

I had a hard time convincing the boss that I deserved a raise.
(It was difficult to convince him.  I had trouble convincing him.)

a period of difficulties, troubles

Phil and Jane had a hard time last year when their son had to be hospitalized.  (They had a lot of troubles.  It was a period of time characterized by difficulties.)

hard times

a fairly long period of time within the history of a country or within a person's life which is marked by difficulties and troubles.

During the depression of the 1930's, people lived through hard times.
When she lost her job, Sally went through some hard times.
_______

In short, good time and terrible time (rotten time) are used when you did something you hoped to enjoy and it was either enjoyable or not.  hard time (tough time) is used when you had a task to do that required your effort, and the task was difficult, or when you experienced an extended period of difficulty because of circumstances around you that were mostly out of your control.

What a great explanation!
Thanks AlpheccaStars and CJ very much for your helpful answers.

Can I use 'tough time' instead of 'hard time' in the quote above?

Yes, but you have to realize that tough is a "less serious" word than hard.  In my opinion, tough is not serious enough to use in a sentence about someone being in the hospital.

You need to pay more attention on what people do, not on what they say or what they seem.

Hi CJ,

Many thanks for the reply. Do you mean if a situation is not serious, we use tough time rather than hard time?

I use tough time when a person has something to do and has encountered or will encounter problems.

I suggest that when you would like to see examples on how phrases like "hard time" "tough time", are used, that you look at the examples in this database:  http://www.americancorpus.org

Studying quotes gives a good feel on how phrases are used, after you look at what the dictionary has to say.

Here are 3 examples out of over 800 hits for "tough time"

folks that are out of jobs, having a very tough time of it and unemployment at a high
Developers will have a tough time getting pending projects built, said Bill McCubbin
Clinton also had an exceptionally tough time during the campaign explaining the evolution of his belief system.

You can also see patterns, a large number of hits in a context, such as the expression "give someone a hard time" - meaning to challenge them on their behaviour or opinions.
As soon as I saw my young aunt, I knew she was a spirited woman who would give my uncle a hard time.

Hi AlpheccaStars,

Thanks for your suggestion.
Can I use 'hard time' instead of 'tough time' in the above examples?

Does 'give someone a hard time' mean deliberately make a situation difficult and unpleasant for them such as treating them badly(hurt them, threaten them etc)?
Why does a spirited woman have something to do with 'would give the uncle a hard time'?

Thank you very much.
