Hi,

Here's what these expressions make me think about.

I was sad with my friend. We sat together, and both of us felt sad.

I was sad about my friend. Something bad happened to my friend. When I heard about it, I felt sad.

Best wishes, Clive

>I was sad with my friend.

To me this is confusing. I wouldn't use it.
