People this an extremely horrible social practise in some parts of the worlds. Especially in southeast asia and few other developing countries(like India). Sorry to post this. There is a social stigma known as Sati. In which a widow of the dead person is forced to burn to death on the husbands cremation. I personally feel that it is wrong if you are forcing someone person to die. It is murder. But why should it be branded wrong if the person is willing to kill themselves on their on without any external social pressure.

First of all, Golden, the 'Sati' is not practiced any more in India. I agree that 'Sati' was practiced in India several centuries ago, but not now. There might be one or two sporadic incidents of ‘Sati’ in India. So, just because these one or two incidents, one shouldn't brand India as a country that follows 'Sati'. As per the law, whether in India or in any other countries, people have rights to promote their lives, but don't have any rights to end their lives. If they do, it is an 'attempt to suicide' and they will be kept behind bars.

First off, let me say that I know next to nothing of this issue.  Based the outline you've given, I think the reason such a practice might be outlawed is to prevent outside pressure to do so.  If someone truly wants to die, I'm not one to object.  Yet, it's hard to imagine that such a practice did not result from an expectation for the wife to do so on the part of others.

Logically, it is impossible. Smile [:)] The person will be behind bars, if caught before jumping into the fire. If it was too late, then the people who forced the victim will be behind bars.

Why does the society force people to live when they want to die.
I mean they are not forcing anyone else to die with them.

I agree Sati is wrong. But what about people who want ot kill themselves.

Because people make this decision usually when they are very vulnerable and not thinking straight. Suicide is a permanent solution to what is normally a temporary solution. Depression can make people feel suicidal but depression is a disease that we can treat or at least attempt to control. Many people get suicidal thoughts at times but when their health or circumstances change, their thoughts also change. We have a duty to protect other people.

What about people who want to do it just for the heck of it.

Nona post your views about suicide in this thread.
